Operator cabins, Boliden Mineral AB
Based in Garpenberg, Sweden, Boliden has completed a project to increase capacity at the mine. This project was carried out below ground and included installation of a new skip and two new crushers. The crushers are exceptionally noisy when operating. The system also generates pulsating air pressure. This combination left the crusher operators feeling exhausted and physically ill at the end of their long shifts.
HIAK was commissioned to examine the working environment around the crushers to establish whether anything could be done. We performed noise measurements on site and confirmed that the noise level was extremely high.
Combined with the pulsating air pressure, this naturally had an adverse effect on operator performance. HIAK built work cabins by the crushers. The cabins were robust enough to withstand the impact of stone splinters and they were fitted with tough, laminated glass.
Following installation of the cabins, the working environment for the operators has improved significantly. Sick leave has declined and the process accessibility has increased.
