Motor testing facilities – Hush House

Customized test cells and engine testing facilities (hush houses) for everything from the automotive industry to fighter aircraft.

HIAK designs and delivers soundproofed test room solutions for engines and drivetrains. We have supplied installations for everything from passenger and commercial vehicle engines to complete engine test facilities for military aircraft. It was within the aviation industry that we originally began our operations; since the launch of the first jet-powered Swedish fighter aircraft, the Saab 32 Lansen, in the 1950s, we have supplied noise-dampening products to air forces in numerous countries. HIAK delivers complete facilities or only sound-dampening sections depending on our customers’ needs. We provide sound-dampening solutions for intake air, exhaust gases, and cooling. We also design control rooms for personnel at these facilities. Our philosophy is to assist our customers with what they need. We can support everything from concept proposals to turnkey installations.

Engine test facilities (Hush House)

We deliver complete engine test facilities, also known as hush houses, including all ancillary equipment. In an engine test facility, the entire aircraft is placed in a testing hall. This requires, in addition to the inflow and outflow of air and exhaust gases, significant sound reduction in the testing hall and the associated control room.

We also assist with the upgrade and maintenance of older facilities to accommodate new engines and/or noise requirements.

Test cells for jet engines

To dampen the noise of a jet engine with an afterburner is one of the most challenging tasks in noise reduction. In addition to the violent noise levels, a significant airflow with cooling air is also required for engine testing to be conducted safely and with the correct parameters.

We perform the acoustic calculations and flow calculations required. All done in an advanced modern FEM/CFD environment.

Test cells for engines and drivetrains

Piston engines face challenges primarily with low-frequency exhaust noise. Depending on the customer’s needs, we design reactive + resistive or solely resistive sound-dampening solutions for intake and exhaust.
